Fight in French Guiana leaves Guyanese with serious injuries

A disagreement between a Guyanese man and his colleagues left him nursing injuries at a French Guiana hospital.

Sherwin Cort called ‘Browne’, 26, of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara was hospitalized for two days after sustaining wounds about his body. Stabroek News (SN) understands that months of heated arguments between Cort and his colleagues, about his conduct, erupted in a Monday morning scuffle.

This newspaper understands that the fracas stemmed from allegations that Cort had been behaving disorderly over the past months and that he had destroyed articles that belonged to some of his colleagues. Cort was allegedly pinned to the ground and beaten by all of the men. However, there have been conflicting reports about the assault as Cort’s relatives claim that the man who reported the incident to them has not been forthright.

SN was told that Cort and his associates, who are all from Victoria and are allegedly living in French Guiana illegally, had been engaged in frequent arguments since he allegedly assaulted one of the men some time back. SN understands that a group of Guyanese, who are allegedly involved in criminal activities, have occupied an area in the country for a number of years. Most of the men allegedly departed Guyana through the illegal crossing at Number 78 Village, Corentyne. Cort’s relatives said he left Guyana last July. He is also said to be a former member of the Guyana Defence Force though, from all appearances, he has been absent without leave.

Cort has since been discharged from the hospital but he is still receiving treatment. He is expected to return to Guyana sometime in the new week.
