A Kitty resident was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail after he admitted breaking into a man’s home and carting off over $100,000 in articles.
The sentence was handed down to Winthorne Luther, 34, of Public Road Kitty by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
He pleaded guilty to a charge of break and enter and larceny.
On February 12 at Public Road, Kitty, Luther broke into the dwelling of Joseph Perreira and stole a toilet bowl, a saw, one engineering machine and a bed sheet, together valued $107,000.
The facts are that on February 11, the complainant secured his home and went out. When he returned the following day, he noticed a southern window open and upon checking discovered that the articles mentioned in the charge were missing. He subsequently made a report to the Kitty Police Station and acting on information received ranks arrested Luther. At the time of his arrest Luther had a bag in his possession. When the police checked the bag they found the stolen articles which were later identified by the complainant.
Just before sentencing, Luther in a plea for leniency said, “I wuk with the man and he didn’t pay me Sir.”
