Mr Lye and others had fought for the return of democracy

Dear Editor,

I commend Mr Clairmont Lye in returning the CCH given to him for his sterling contributions in the political and social spheres. I absolutely agree with his comments with regards to the Burnhamite position the PPP has assumed in its disregard for the people who fought for the return of democratic principles. For those who are not informed Mr Lye is an honest and charitable individual, a true Christian. When the PPP was still in the wilderness and clutching at straws, with no kind of plan to unseat the government of the day, people like Mr Lye, Yesu Persaud, Sam Hinds, Birbal Singh and several others of GUARD spoke against the government and the PNC at several public rallies. The public demonstration and meeting held at Parade Ground drew several thousands and it signalled the beginning of the end of dictatorship or so we thought.

Mr Hinds and Mr Gopaul are part of the PPP, the new owners of all Guyana. The undemocratic processes we now see make a mockery of democracy, to quote Mr Lye. It is quite clear that the PPP has no interest in religion and its principles, Mr Lye is a religious person. Those who call themselves pandits, moulvis or reverends and are aligned with the PPP are making a mockery of religion.

Among the most important of the demands that the political system must foster and satisfy are the demands for equality of opportunity, political participation and social justice. These demands are much more difficult to meet than those derived directly from the economic and technological facets of life. The process of political development includes the capacity to provide more and more individuals with the power to improve their own positions in society on the basis of personal merit rather than personal connections. The PPP has done nothing as to the above, they are wallowing in profligacy and ignorance. I have just finished reading Sweetening bitter Sugar by Clem Seecharran. The Jagans were never interested in the sugar workers’ welfare, they merely wanted their support to propagate communism. Today Jagdeo fares no better, he is a creature of the PPP and like what Joey Jagan said, the ministers and others in the PPP work for his parents.

Mr Lye, you are not alone, others are out there sharing your sentiments but lack the courage to come forward and call the sickle a sickle. It also is very interesting to observe the kind of subservience displayed even by important officials and men of scholarship. Last but not least, men of little character from the big apple are now destined to be advisers.

Yours faithfully,

Vijay Singh
