Remedial work is continuing on the L’Aventure Secondary School in Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara and yesterday Forms Three to Five resumed classes though the lower forms have not yet done so.
Stabroek News was informed that repairs to one of the school’s blocks are still ongoing, and that is the reason for the lower forms not yet returning to school.
On February 12, after years of working under poor conditions and numerous letters to the authorities regarding the situation, students and their parents as well as staff of the West Demerara school locked the gates to protest its deplorable state.
They had distributed a flyer listing the problems faced by the school – inoperable toilets, bat infestation, exposed wiring, rotten floorboards, a leaking roof and inadequate furniture, among others.
Regional Chairman of the region, Julius Faerber in an interview with this newspaper had said that the most pressing problems will be looked at first though other works have to wait until funds are available.
After the protest remedial works were undertaken and it was hoped that the children would have returned to school last Monday. However, while students of Forms Three to Five resumed classes yesterday, it is now anticipated that all the children will return to school next Monday. Additionally, a meeting with regional officials to discuss the situation is slated for today.
