John draws first blood from Lowe

Michelle John drew first blood in the much anticipated showdown with Trenace Lowe by defeating her arch-rival in the finals of the women’s singles event Saturday night as the National Sports Commission (NSC)/Guyana Table Tennis Association annual Mashra-mani competion continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

“I feel very happy winning and was prepared to match up against Lowe since I knew from the beginning that I would be matching up against her,” John told Stabroek sport.

Lisa Lewis defeated Nathalie Cummings for third position forcing Cummings to state that although she was mentally unable to beat Lewis, “I will get her next time.”

Colin France claimed the first of what should be many titles when he played in the round robin `B’ Class four-person finals unbeaten. John copped the runner-up position with Tristan Gaime third and Nigel Bryan fourth.

In the boy’s doubles final Darwin Walcott and Joel Alleyne defeated Reshon Hadmon and Devon Richmond while in the third place play off Ronaldo Bharat and Bryan defeated Elishaba Johnson and Warren Hackshaw.

Paul Meusa, France, Dwayne Dick and Joel Alleyne have qualified for the round robin final of the men’s singles event.

In the quarter finals Alleyne sought and exacted revenge against Bryan winning 11-4, 11-2,11-9; Andrew Daly forfeited his match against Meusa who was up 2-0 courtesy of 11-7,11-6 wins; Hewley Griffith lost to France 11-8, 11-8, 11-5 and Dick defeated Hadmon 11-7,11-8,11-7.
