Brothers before court on chicken smuggling charges

Two brothers have been charged with evading customs duties in connection with a quantity of frozen chicken, believed to have been smuggled into the country and which has been seized by Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Chandradat Ramdass called ‘Sulkar’ and Balkissoon Ramdass called ‘Johnny Ramdass’ appeared before Magistrate Alan Wilson in Court Nine on February 22, and pleaded not guilty to two offences of being knowingly concerned with the fraudulent evasion of import duties of Customs and dealing with goods with intent to defraud the GRA of duties.

Chandradat Ramdass was placed on $300,000 bail for both offences, whilst Johnny Ramdass was placed on $200,000 bail.

The particulars of the offences are that the defendants, on or around January 12, 2007, were knowingly concerned with the fraudulent evasion of import duties of Customs by causing a quantity of uncustomed frozen chicken to be stored on the storage premises of Best All Season Seafoods owned and operated by Clayton Hinds at Lot 8 Industrial Area, West Ruimveldt.

Prosecuting for the Revenue Authority is Attorney-at-law Gino Peter Persaud, while Attorney-at-law Roysdale Forde is representing the Ramdasses.

The magistrate has set April 3, for trial.
