Sport Letter

Dear Editor,

It is said that seeing is believing but in this case after witnessing many trials in my twenty seven years of watching cricket at all levels in this cricket loving nation of ours,

I am again shocked and am now convinced that the reason for the decline in our cricket is our selectors at our under 19 and under 15 levels, especially in Georgetown. I believe that my experience in sports and my passion for the game qualify me to make this bold assumption.

Keston Harcourt (Semple) has been performing with excellence at the highest levels of our domestic competitions. A look at the figures at the first division, second division and under 19 levels will show that he demonstrated the tremendous talent spotted in him by Roger Harper who said “this is one for the future, let us care him”.

This nonsense must stopped by the few selectors who are bent on making the Guyana Cricket Board look bad at this time of Cricket World Cup when the GCB is doing its level best to build a better image and create a favorable acceptance for the game throughout Guyana. This injustice should not be allowed to be brushed under the carpet like so many other issues in Guyanese and West Indian Cricket in the past.

In the words of one of our former cricket administrators Dr. Linden Dodson (Doc) “These men are bent on running our cricket like the politics of this nation.” Just to prove the point and validity of Doc’s statement in the Georgetown squad of 14 players there are three wicket keepers.

I challenge the board and the selectors of the under 19 squad in Georgetown to publish the figures of those selected in preference to Keston Harcourt (Semple) and show the nation that they are dong a good job and prove me wrong.

DCC wake up! Where is the fighting spirit of Lance Gibbs, Clive Hubert and Freddo, where is Mr. Harper, Mr. Hunte, Mr. Adonis? Are we going to take yet another injustice? These are the real issues that are causing the slide at DCC. Are we going to react to these issues when fans, friends and families start behaving like European football fans?

Yours faithfully,
