Ban on vehicles affects flour trucks

A ban on lorries and other vehicles along the East Bank Highway yesterday during the hours of 7 am to 9 pm left many flour trucks in limbo.

On Thursday, the Guyana Police Force announced that articulated vehicles: lorries, tractors, trailers and animal-drawn carts were banned from travelling along the East Bank Demerara Public Road from Timehri to Mandela Avenue.

Stabroek News understands from a source that the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO) was unable to deliver or sell some 10,000 bags of flour normally transported in trucks owing to the ban. Trucks from outlying areas like Berbice were unable to purchase flour supplies.

The source noted that NAMILCO was contemplating opening late into the evening yesterday and before 7 am today.

A large amount of flour is expected to be used this Phagwah weekend and many will be looking forward for supplies from their shops.

Today the ban will be enforced from 7 am to 10 pm and tomorrow from 6 am to 1 pm.
