Dear Editor,
We, octogenarians, rapidly approaching the status of ‘nonagenarianism’, are agonised over the condition of other seniors who dwell in established homes provided for them in our homeland Guyana.
If our information is correct, we think that these homes listed below were the brainchild of, and we do believe, were built by humanitarian donors:
1. Chase’s Indigent Home
2. Byer’s Home
3. Dharm Shala
4. Archer’s Home
5. Uncle Eddie’s Home
Readers, when last have you passed by these buildings. We have seen a cow approaching the front en-trance of one of them because of a broken fence. Many of them need a coat of paint to enhance the outward appearance. We would also like to see cheery brightly coloured walls on the inside.
A beloved expatriate priest so much loved our dear land of Guyana that his desire was to remain here if there were a home for seniors in which he would have been comfortable – we are convinced that his demands would have been simple ones, but this desire was not fulfilled.
These octogenarians, these senior citizens of Guyana, make an appeal to you our business community and others to consider us favourably and adopt our homes for seniors in whatever way you think fit. Seniors have made immense contributions to the life and development of Guyana in one way or the other and as such, in their declining years, are entitled to dwell under conditions of peace, love, harmony and happiness.
Powers that be, you look forward to visitors coming to our dear land. Large buildings and well-appointed hotels are an impressive display but how the disabled, the children and elderly are treated will not go unnoticed. Those buildings speak for themselves.
