A gunman yesterday shot and injured a clerk of the Beacon Foundation at its Quamina and Carmichael streets location.
The shot man, Khemraj Sookdeo, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was reported as being in a stable condition.
Nothing was stolen as, according to reports, the man went looking for the manager of the location and shot Sookdeo when he was told that she was not there.
No money was stolen from the foundation and from all indications no such demand was made.
According to Vice-President of the foundation, Doreen de Caires the gunman went to Beacon around 12.40 pm and told the guard that an ex-employee of the organisation had sent him to see the manager.
As a result, he was allowed upstairs where Sookdeo was alone in the office having lunch.
He confronted the clerk and asked for the manager following which he shot the man.
Meanwhile, the security guard told reporters that once the man told him he had been sent by the former employee he allowed him in. The guard said he then heard a gunshot and before he could have reacted he saw the same man running down the stairs shouting: “Gunshots! Gunshots!”
He said the gunman was wearing a yellow and black shirt and a black pants and he escaped on a bicycle.
When Stabroek News arrived on the scene, a small crowd had gathered outside the building and workers were crying as the clerk was being taken to the hospital.
Residents said that bandits often strike in the area.
The police arrived and commenced investigations by taking statements from the employees.
