I believe there is a conflict of interest

Dear Editor,

I refer to letter by Vishok Persaud captioned “I signed a Letter of Intent with BMW since December 2005 to establish Prestige Motors” (07.03.11). I am hard pressed to understand his logic or his suggestion that an earlier writer apologise to his father.

It does not matter how long ago he applied for the BMW licence or the fact that he is the only authorized supplier of BMWs in Guyana. It is a conflict of interest that he is supplying vehicles to the government.

Is it not possible for others to have applied for a licence to supply BMWs in Guyana? Is the application process so lengthy that others could not have applied for a licence and competed to supply the cars in the time that they were required? All of this confusion could have been avoided if someone had the decency to explain the process of selection.

There should also be a law, as is in the case of the lottery, in which employees of the government and their families cannot bid or be selected for government contracts regardless of if they are the only person on earth with the relevant expertise or products.

Yours faithfully,

Petal Roberts
