The Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) says the pressure parts of its boilers are undergoing their first pressure test at the state-of-the-art Skeldon facility.
Guysuco, in a press release, said one of the two 127-tonne steam per hour boilers have passed the test. The company said this is an important stage in the construction of the boilers as it will confirm the integrity of all pressurized pasts at a test pressure of 90 bars (1,350psi).
Meanwhile the diesel generator sets are now housed in an enclosed building and are being connected to the auxiliary equipment that is required to complete the overall plant, Guysuco said. The 69-kilovolt export transformer is installed and the support works for the terminal point of the transmission line are being erected.
The electrostatic precipitators are under construction and will remove all solid participles from the boiler flue gases resulting in a smoke-free emission from the chimney-stack conforming to World Bank Environmental standards the company said. The diffuser construction continues with all the juice trays now installed and the structural steelwork for the diffuser juice heaters erected and the building to house the two dewatering mills is almost complete. This will contain the two large, four roller mills that will remove water from the bagasse after it has left the diffuser and before it is sent to the boilers as fuel.
Guysuco said on completion the Skeldon facility will give the country’s sugar industry a technological push in the right direction. The facility is expected to be one of the most modern in Latin America and possibly the best in the Caribbean. It is expected to provide employment for more than 300 local and Chinese workers.
