Bandits snatch $5M from Ansa McAl

Armed bandits on Wednesday evening robbed Trinidad beverage giant, Ansa McAl Trading of some $5M cash and relieved a security guard of his weapon during a daring attack at the company’s Public Road, La Penitence main office.

Police say they have since detained one employee as investigations continue.

According to a police statement the incident occurred around 7:15 pm on Wednesday. The statement added that investigations have so far revealed that the accountant together with another employee and a security guard employed by a popular security service were in a room where money belonging to the company was being counted.

The accountant reportedly sent the employee to purchase beers. On his return the employee was confronted by the two men who held him at gunpoint. The guard subsequently opened the door and was confronted by them. He was robbed of his .38 Special Taurus revolver with six live matching rounds and the company of its money. During the process, the accountant was also robbed of personal items and $14,000, the police release added.

Stabroek News made contact with the company yesterday, but no one was available to shed any light on the robbery. Police sources told this newspaper that it would appear that something sinister went on.
