Some 350 volunteers ready for CWC

Some 350 official Cricket World Cup (CWC) volunteers are ready for the six CWC matches being held at the Providence Stadium from Wednesday, according to Sabrina Panday, the volunteer coordinator at the Local Organizing Committee (LOC).

CWC matches will be held in Guyana from March 28 to April 9, and the country is expecting a number of tourists for the games.

Stabroek News understands that the required number of volunteers is 310 but 40 additional volunteers are on standby.

The volunteers range in ages from 18 to 70 years old and were recruited from across the country. However, all the volunteers will be residing close to the city.

Panday told Stabroek News this week that all the volunteers will be equipped with two pairs of official CWC volunteer uniforms (orange/red shirts with khakis), a raincoat and a water bottle among other items.

The volunteer positions were overly subscribed with around 800 persons seeking the appointments and Panday told Stabroek News that after a screening process the final number was reached. The majority of the volunteers will be stationed at the Providence Stadium and the remaining number will be at the airport to greet the CWC officials and at the official CWC hotels including Cara, Buddy’s International and Le Meridien Pegasus.

Another 1,000 volunteers will be available through the National Volunteer Program. But these volunteers will act as tour guides and will be placed at strategic points in the city to assist tourists. They will be dressed in the traditional volunteer uniforms and not the official CWC uniforms.
