The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) advises consumers to request weighing of solid goods by mass and not volume.
The GNBS, in a press release, said it has not verified pint and gallon cups for some time so “their accuracy is highly questionable” and further, retailers should weigh and package solid goods by weight; grammes and kilogrammes.
The release also said the practise of selling and buying solid goods such as rice and peas, using pint, gallon and litre measuring cups is illegal and always results in the consumer being robbed. These goods are solid and must be weighed on verified metric scales instead of measuring cups, the GNBS said. Further, it is advocating that retailers weigh and package solid goods by weight and the package labels must state the correct amounts for easy consumer choice.
