Khan, Sukhram tops field in Suriname

According to a press release, the tournament attracted over 90 entrants from the Guianas (French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana).

But, led by Khan, Tim Baharani, Colin Ming and Avinash Persaud among the men and Sukhram and Ritva Sallmen among the women, the Guyana contingent came away with the best showing as Guyana copped the best gross score in both the male and female categories.

Runner-up 2006 Sportswoman of the Year and reigning National Ladies Champion Sukhram again outclassed her counterparts while Imram Khan put in a stunning performance on the rain-affected second day to come away with the best gross score for the tournament.

In addition to winning the best gross prize with scores of 86 and 76, Sukhram also won the longest drive prize among the ladies, the release stated.

Guyana was also top in the ‘B’ Division with Digicel’s Baharani turning in the best overall net with net scores of 71 and 63. He was closely

followed by Ronald Bulkan, who came second with net scores of 77 and 60.

Bulkan’s net second day score of 60 was the single best net score of the tournament and only two shots from the course net record, the release pointed out. Other prizes won by Guyanese players were the much coveted Longest Drive on the second day which was won by Ming as well as the Nearest to the Pin which was won by Guyana’s Open Champion Persaud.

Sallmen had the fourth best net prize for the ladies while Basil Sukhram won the professional category.

The Guyana contingent was led by Club Captain, Martin Short and included Vice President Mike Gayadin, past captain Patrick Prashad, Raj Sankar, Mike Mangal, Chen Deo, young George Bulkan and others.

At the presentation ceremony Club Secretary John Tracey thanked the Paramaribo Gulf Club for their exceedingly warm hospitality and for putting on a well organised and run tournament and the sponsors RBTT for their generous sponsorship. On behalf of the Lusignan Golf Club he expressed the hope of seeing another large Surinamese contingent at the 2007 Guyana Open which will be held later in the year.
