X-Ray technician not Radiologist

Dear Editor,

Please permit me to comment on the inappropiate designation given to a member of staff of the Balwant Singh’s Hospital by John “Slingshot” Drepaul in his letter captioned “I send thanks to the many Guyanese who helped me recover after my unfortunate injury during Mash” (07.03.23).

He refers to someone named Godiva as a Radiologist at the hospital. As far as I am aware the title of Radiologist is given to a Medical Doctor who specialises in the field of Radiology.

A Radiographer is a University Degree or Diploma trained Technologist in the use of x-radiation for medical purposes and an X-Ray Technician is trained in the basics to be an assistant to the Radiographer and the Radiologist.

As far as I am aware Ms. Godiva is not any of these things and is not registered with the local body, GAMIP.

Please give the proper recognition and respect to the health workers who are properly, formally trained to perform these examinations on a daily basis.

A lot of time and money as well as dedication was placed in the pursuit of an education in a career in the service of humanity.

The use of X-Radiation is not to be taken lightly.

I salute all the thousands of professional health workers who care for the people of the world everyday.

Yours faithfully,

(name and address supplied)

Editor’s note

We are informed Ms Godiva is an X-Ray Technician. There is a full-time radiologist on the staff of that hospital but his services were not required on this occasion.
