Cops probing Sheriff St assault

Police are probing the robbery and assault of a family of four outside the Sheriff Night Club early Monday morning that left one man nursing a stab wound to his ear and two women traumatised.

Stabroek News confirmed yesterday that the family had reported the incident to the Kitty police and the matter is currently under investigation. But there have been no developments so far.

Yesterday one of the women attacked said she could remember at least two faces and could point out the men if she were to see them again. However, she said it was difficult to identify the others because the group was very large.

“It was so many of them I can’t say the exact number but it was more than 20. I remember the guy holding the gun to my husband’s head and another one who was holding onto me,” she related.

The woman said she is trying to erase the attack from her mind for now because it causes a lot of grief just thinking about it. Her mother and younger sister who were assaulted by the men were resting but the ordeal is still fresh on their minds, according to her. She expressed hope that the police would be able to bring the men responsible to justice.

On Monday around 2 am the family had just left the Sheriff Street night spot and had boarded a taxi when the gang descended on them and in full view of the public assaulted, beat and robbed them before walking calmly away. Minutes before that occurred, the lone male in the group had accidentally spilled a drink on a group of men sitting nearby and the men demanded that he replace it and buy extra drinks. He refused to buy extra drinks.

When the family left the night club the men followed them outside and pulled them out of a taxi. They pulled guns, broke a bottle, stabbed the male in the group and assaulted two of the women.

According to the family, many persons were on Sheriff Street at the time but no one rendered any assistance. After they were robbed, beaten and assaulted, the family stopped a taxi to go to the hospital and the man demanded money before making the trip. One of the women took off her earrings and paid him with them. (Iana Seales)
