Cricket at Bourda

As you read this the World’s third largest sporting event and spectacular – CRICKET WORLD CUP 2007, will be playing one of its most important legs in good old Guyana.

Six Super-Eight matches involving top teams like New Zealand and Sri Lanka will battle at a spanking new stadium at Providence on the East bank of Demerara.

By then a new interesting book titled “Cricket at Bourda” will be out. This snippet is just a teaser for you to purchase this literary gem. Contributors include Stephen Camacho, Dr. Winston Mc Gowan, Dr. Ian Mc Donald as well as other Georgetown Cricket Club Stalwarts.

The reminiscences are rich, personal and indicative of the Club’s and the venue’s status and legacy in regional and international cricketing history.

You’ll read that the GCC is the oldest Cricket Club in the Caribbean, about West Indies first ever Test match victory there; of Roach, Headley and Constantine; of the exploits of Gibbs, Kanhai, Camacho and Chanderpaul – all at Bourda.

Cricket fan or not be sure to buy a copy. You’ll read of loyalty and pride to and in an entity.

Like the time Norman Wight, the Club’s then best bowler, left his sick bed, wearing two sweaters to stem the hot fever, and bowled his GCC Club to victory in a Case Cup Final against the East Indian Cricket Club.

And years later, when the loyal Keith Glasgow turned out to bowl for his GCC – on his wedding day – leaving only when the match was “safe” at Tea Time!
