High Court trial for woman charged with baby theft

Magistrate Oneidge Walrond-Allicock yesterday committed Marcel La Cruz, the woman accused of stealing a teenaged girl’s baby, to stand trial in the High Court.

La Cruz, 25, of 12 Supply, East Bank Demerara was accused of stealing the baby last December. She was placed on $100,000 bail on her second court appearance after being remanded on the first occasion.

The preliminary inquiry into the matter came to an end yesterday when the magistrate ruled that there was sufficient evidence to support a charge of child stealing. Attorney-at-law Ronald Burch-Smith who appeared for La Cruz had made no-case submissions but these were overruled.

It is alleged that on December 28 at Georgetown La Cruz took away and detained an infant with intent to deprive the mother.
