US navy ship to operate in Caribbean waters

The United States (US) Embassy says the navy ship the USS Carney (DDG 64) will be operating in the eastern Caribbean Sea for several weeks and might lend support to anti-narcotics and other missions.

According to a press release from the Embassy the ship’s deployment to the US Southern Command area of responsibility supports commitments to engage with regional partners to support hemispheric stability, security and regional prosperity.

The ship could be assigned a variety of missions during this deployment, which include routine patrolling of Caribbean waters, support to counter narco-trafficking operations and “Theater Security Cooperation” events ashore which could include military-to-military exchanges, multi-national exercises and training, diplomatic port visits and community relations activities.

The Embassy said the “Carney is an Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class destroyer with multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities. It can operate independently or as part of carrier strike groups, surface action groups, amphibious ready groups, and underway replenishment groups.”
