National Awards to be announced on May 26

Guyana’s national awards would be announced on May 26, Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon has said.

Luncheon told members of the media at a post cabinet media briefing on Thursday that the relevant commission was in the process of soliciting nominations for the various awards. He explained that the serving members on the commission are volunteering their services since the old commission had become non-operational.

Office of the President Chief of Protocol Vic Persaud heads the commission, Luncheon said while Chief Justice Carl Singh is the Chancellor of the Orders.

For the last four years, there was no investiture ceremony, which had become traditional ever since Guyana became a Republic in 1970.

The awards are presented to Guyanese who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s development, worked beyond the call of duty and for other outstanding achievements.
