Just over 10,000 patients treated by US hospital ship

Some 10,081 patients were treated by medical personnel from the USNS Comfort and US$20,000 worth of medical equipment and supplies was donated to persons and institutions during a week of humanitarian service here.

According to a press release from the United States Embassy 150 surgeries were performed and 9,931 other patients treated during the exercise.

Some surgeries were performed onboard the ship, and others were done onshore. The release said because the large-scale operations were conducted in six locations simultaneously they were able to provide a wide range of services including immunizations, optometry and dental exams, dental varnishes and distribute reading glasses and pharmaceuticals.

Hundreds of other persons had to be turned away.
