Guardian of toddler remanded over ill treatment of child

A woman who was left as the guardian of a toddler and who allegedly ill-treated the child by beating and leaving him alone in the house was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys.

Karen John, 39, was not required to plead to ill treatment and neglect of a child when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on September 26 at Thomas Street, Kitty, she willfully ill-treated and neglected a five-year-old boy in a manner likely to cause suffering to his health. The child is said to have been found locked in John’s home alone with marks of violence on his body.

The case was transferred to Court Six for October 12.
