Asthma ‘sufferer’ fined for ganja

A young unemployed resident of Shieldstown, West Bank Berbice was on Monday fined $10,000 at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court after he admitted to being in possession of a narcotic that he said he uses for “asthma.”

Magistrate Geeta Chandan heard that on October 8 at Shieldstown, Sookram `Sunny’ Bharrat had in his possession a narcotic, that is to say two grams of cannabis.

In presenting the particulars of the case, police prosecutor, Sergeant Hatty Anthony told the court that the police were on a patrol in the vicinity of the community centre ground at around 8:45 am when they saw the defendant acting in a suspicious manner.

She said a search was conducted on his person and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found in his left pants pocket. According to Anthony the items were weighed in the presence of Bharrat.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and told the magistrate that he uses it for his asthmatic condition. He was fined $10,000 or 20 days imprisonment. He was also ordered to perform community services from 9 am to midday daily until December 14.
