Tally clerk remanded over causing death

A tally clerk who allegedly drove his motor car dangerously and struck down a motorcyclist on Durban Street resulting in the man’s death was yesterday remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

Leon Lee, 20, a tally clerk who resides at 473 Kiskadee Drive, South Ruimveldt Gardens pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on October 13 at Durban and Lime streets he drove his motor car PHH 4927 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Dexter Baptiste. It was reported that Baptiste from Laing Avenue died after his motorcycle collided with the car.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital but died while undergoing treatment. The scooter he was riding broke into numerous pieces upon impact.

Attorney-at-law Mark Waldron who represented Lee told the court that his client is a graduate of the business school and works as a tally clerk at the John Fernandes Group of Companies. He stated that Lee has never been involved in any incident before and the deceased may have contributed to the unfortunate accident.

He asked for his client to be placed on bail saying that Baptiste’s family was not desirous of pursuing the matter and they had reached an amicable resolution.

Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews stated he would have to seek advice on the matter since a life was lost.

He added that since the parties were indicating that they wanted to settle the matter he would not object to bail.

The magistrate however remanded Lee until October 23.
