Potable water supply will soon be restored to Mahdia, Local Government Minister Kellawan Lall told residents during a two-day visit to the area last weekend.
Lall said although the Region Eight community is small it has seen tremendous development within the past few years in the face of many challenges.
The Government Information Agency (GINA) quoted Regional Chairman Senor Bell as saying that potable water supply was one of the most important projects carried out by the administration.
Water supply was cut off after miners dredged through the road and ripped up pipelines in the area. Lall said the government committed to ensuring that the water system is repaired urgently and pointed out that other measures had been put in place to supply water in the interim.
The minister also inspected the road linking Mahdia to Linden and two new bridges along the trail which both cross Tiger Creek. The region built the three-mile bridge which is 90 feet long, at a cost of $6.5M.
The Mekdeci Company built the Tiger Creek Bridge. Lall said he is satisfied with the condition of the new bridges though the road needs some repairs. He said he is hopeful that Mekdeci will do maintenance work before the next rainy season.
Meanwhile more than 2,500 people will be benefiting from mobile telephone services before the end of the year.
A 400-foot mast is being assembled and erected to facilitate telecommunication service.
