Indecent assault complaint against gov’t official withdrawn

The teenager who made an allegation of indecent assault against a senior government functionary has since signed a sworn affidavit saying that she is unreservedly withdrawing the allegation she made.

Stabroek News understands that the affidavit, which was sworn to before a commissioner to oaths, was signed since Monday of this week and a copy was sent to the police at the Alberttown Police Station and an officer signed as receiving same. This newspaper understands that a file on the matter was still sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecu-tions (DPP) but it is highly unlikely that any charges would be made out against the man since the virtual complainant has withdrawn the report.

According to reports reaching this newspaper, in the affidavit the 17-year-old reportedly stated that she was instigated by friends to make the report. The mother of the girl also swore to an affidavit stating that she knew her daughter had sworn to the affidavit and its contents were true and correct. It is understood that the alleged incident arose after the functionary had taken the girl for something to eat.

It is understood that from the inception the government functionary had maintained his innocence and had indicated his willingness to fight the matter in the courts.
