The Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with Region Seven farmers to promote sustainable farming as it continues to work with and in hinterland communities to reduce obstacles to agricultural development.
Minister Robert Persaud said Agriculture Month will focus on hinterland communities this year in keeping with the ministry’s vision in his opening address at the Kamarang Farmers’ Day and Exhibition last Sunday.
According to a press release the event which included farmers from Kako, Jawalla, Quebanang and Waramadong was held to allow Persaud to learn firsthand about the communities’ needs in order to enhance livelihoods. He said the ministry will assist the farmers to provide food for themselves and to engage in value-added activities and, to this end, he hinted at the possibility of allowing them access to a mini processing facility. Persaud also said his ministry will continue to work with the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs to enhance livelihoods in the Upper Mazaruni communities. To this end the ministry has already trained and employed two extension agents to service the region by providing technical advice to farmers.
Meanwhile, Minister within the Ministry of Education Dr Desrey Fox, who accompanied Persaud on the visit, told the group that they needed to seek guidance on the best agricultural practices in addition to their practical experiences.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry Dr Dindyal Permaul, Hinterland Coordinator John Woolford, acting Chief Hydromet Officer Bhaleka Seulall and Regional Chairman Holbert Knights also attended the session.
