Needy children’s fund gives 22 scholarships

Radio’s Needy Children’s Fund recently gave scholarships to 22 children for the academic year 2007/2008 under its annual scholarship programme.

A press release from the group said the presentation was conducted at a simple ceremony hosted at the National Communications Network’s (NCN) Homestretch Avenue studio. The fund’s Chairman, NCN Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Sattaur said the organization had traditionally awarded one scholarship per region to children who would otherwise be unable to complete their studies because of financial difficulties.

The recipients are Morton U Daniels from the Hotoquai Primary School and Jacqueline James from the Hosororo Primary School in Region One; Taymouth Manor Primary’s Ocelisa Marks and Fisher Primary’s Gomattie Ramsamooj in Region Two; and Region Three’s Whitney La Cruz, from the Saraswat Primary and Melissa Persaud from the Leonora Primary. In Region Four Kelly Mohan, from the Lusignan Primary and Shabana Singh from the Lancaster Primary were given awards along with Region Five’s Darshanie Chuniram from Novar Primary and Beatrice Peters from the Ithaca Primary.

Region Six’s Troyson Park, from St Therese’s Primary and Kevin Hazel from the Rosehall Primary; Region Seven’s Lisa Williams from the Makouria Primary and Joseph Fitzpatrick from the St John-the-Baptist Primary also got scholarships. Region Eight’s Onecia Cooper, from the Mahdia Primary and Shenika Bowen from the Micobia Primary were recipients along with Region Nine’s Andrew Green from the Tipuru Primary and Azalea Jacobus from the Aranaputa Primary and Region Ten’s Stanrick Forsythe from the Christiansburg Primary and Oslyn George from the Amelia’s Ward Primary. Georgetown students Eon Blair, from the Enterprise Primary and Roxroy Boston from the Winfer Gardens Primary were also given awards.

The scholarship includes the cost of books and other items necessary for the children’s schooling. For the past two years the group has handed out awards to 22 students across the regions.

Treasurer Doris Lewis said the fund started 53 years ago and she appealed for continued assistance so that the committee’s work could be expanded.

In closing remarks member Rakhee Dharmo said the fund would be hosting its annual dinner on November 25 at Le Meridien Pegasus, and children’s Christmas parties countrywide in December.

It appealed to the public to support the ongoing toy drive for the parties.

Tickets for the dinner are available at fund’s desk at NCN and toys can also be sent there.
