Pork-knocker remanded on wounding charge

Magistrate Geeta Chandan denied a West Berbice port-knocker his pre-trial freedom when he appeared at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court on Monday to answer to a charge of felonious wounding.

Richard Ramlagan, 33, of Number 41 Village, reportedly wounded Rayman Pestano with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Satrohan Dayaram, opposed bail based on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. He submitted that Pestano is still hospitalized and is in serious condition.

Defence counsel Perry Gossai argued that his client was attacked and that if granted bail he would attend court. He submitted that the victim was a patient of the psychiatric hospital and that he was previously charged with murder.

The defendant, who first appeared at the Fort Wellington Court on Thursday last, is scheduled to appear at the Weldaad Magis-trate’s Court on Thursday for bail review.
