The PPP/C should deal with these matters more professionally

Dear Editor,

Recently two separate and unrelated incidents in the news again highlighted the shortcomings of our government in the way these matters were handled.

Firstly, there is the uncontrollable behaviour of an unnamed government minister in a rum shop brawl over a woman.

My question is this “Have our public figures totally lost all self-control and self-respect to be behaving in such a disgusting manner in a rum shop of all places? This minister’s name should not be withheld so that the people he serves know the kind of personality they are up against, and in addition he should be charged with assault and attempted murder.

The second item is about the sweep on a beer gardens in the Stabroek market area. Yes, I commend the joint work of the customs and police for the surgically precise manner in which they swooped down and caught the violators. This however begs the question why aren’t the same swiftness and tactics employed when dealing with crime related matters.

It seems to me that the police’s hands are tied . As one voter commenting on John Howard’s loss to Labor’s Kevin Rudd in the recent Australian elections said “It’s the arrogance of being in power for too long”.

The PPP/C knowing that they will be there for a very long time to come should deal with these matters more professionally. After all they have nothing to lose and much to gain by having the rest of the people behind them.

Nothing the government does will work until it can establish its ability to unite all Guyanese.

With Venezuela stirring up again our government more than ever needs a united Guyana in which Brown, Black, Red, Yellow and Polka Dot can stand together.

Yours faithfully,

Bernard Ramsay
