I welcome the new Indian High Commissioner

Dear Editor,

Guyana has been a recipient of tremendous assistance from the subcontinent, India in all areas of development; such as technical training in the form of ITEC scholarships, infrastructural development (this is quite conspicuous in the successful completion of the beautiful cricket stadium and installation of the much needed traffic lights in Georgetown). More importantly, India has lent its expertise in the fine arts, through the Indian Cultural Centre which has seen many Guyanese developing their skills in Indian music, dance, Tabla and Yoga. All of these disciplines are intrinsic in keeping Indian culture more vibrant and adding to a more culturally oriented society.

The previous High Commissioner Mr Avinash Gupta has done exceptionally well in Guyana during his tenure and we are proud of him. He was the catalyst in forging relationships and presented tangible scenarios of national interest. He has left a legacy for his successor to follow.

Expectations would be high of the new High Commissioner, such as more cultural programmes from students of the Indian cultural centre in all the major counties in Guyana and internationally so that Guyanese and other nationals can be able to see performances far from mediocrity in addition to other national programmes that he may be coming with.

It is with immense honour that Guyanese welcome the new Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, His Excellency, Mr S K Mandal and we hope that his deputation be a successful one. Guyanese can assure you sir that with our great hospitality, you would certainly feel at home.

Welcome to Guyana and have an enjoyable stay.

Yours faithfully,

Somdatt Ramessar
