The problem of persons of unsound mind needs to be addressed

Dear Editor,

I have attached two photographs of a vehicular accident which left newspaper vendor, Sabestian Khemraj in obvious pain.

My regrets are extended to him and his family who will be without valuable income for the holidays.

The motor lorry registration number GJJ 5158 was reportedly travelling in an easterly direction and in the process of negotiating a turn north into Ocean Garden in the village of Meten-Meer-Zorg on the West Coast of Demerara when the unfortunate accident occurred.

Residents believe that a man of unsound mind was somewhat responsible. He would usually take all sorts of junk and place them along the road side, as he did in this case, presenting the newspaper vendor with no escape as the side of the lorry came into contact with him. He suffered visible injury to his right ankle.

It is time that the local authorities take a firm grip on the issue of persons of unsound mind in our society. They are after all, victims of a society which has lost the caring touch, a society gripped by the vicious effects of poverty and economic deprivation.

Stop the talk. It’s time for action. The police are finally dealing with the issue of traffic lawlessness. Let’s support their work.

Let the Ministry of Human Services in collaboration with the Local Government Organs begin to address the social ills such as our unfortunate citizens of unsound minds roaming our towns and villages and our children who do the same in addition to working, when they ought to be doing the things that children do.

Yours faithfully,

Mervyn Williams, MP.
