The General Minibus Association of Guyana yesterday called on the government to intervene in reducing the prices of fuel and vehicle spare parts and said it would take appropriate action if this was not done.
The association, in a press statement, said it wanted the prices for gas to be sold at about $650 per gallon and accused government of not responding appropriately to high prices. It said even though government said there was a long list of items exempt from the Value Added Tax (VAT), consumers were still burdened.
“We are not mindful to raise the transportation fares as we recognize the suffering of the Guyanese people but if government does not address the situation we will no doubt be forced to take appropriate action,” the statement signed by president Lylon Weithers said.
The association said it was giving the administration until December 15 to make a decision and called on all members of society to join in its struggle. It also lobbied for a reduction in VAT or have it removed as people are already burdened with taxes.
In another statement, the association also called on the Police Traffic Department to clamp down on traffic lawlessness which it said, was swiftly creeping back on the roads.
