Parliamentary committee to deal with term limits for elections commissioners

Government is proposing term limits for commissioners serving on the Elections Commission. The current legislation governing the body does not speak to this and so Prime Minister Samuel Hinds at last Parliamentary sitting moved a motion in this regard.

No decision was made and Opposition leader Robert Corbin informed the house that such a motion would not have to be moved but rather considered at the level of the parliamentary committee on constitutional reform.

As such, he requested that there be no further motions and for the matter to be taken to that committee.

The constitution currently provides for term limits for three years for commissioners on other commissions.

The matter is to be proceeded with at the next sitting of the committee on constitutional reform.
