Using the term ‘King’ shows disrespect for the President

Dear Editor,

Your newspaper has recently published at least two letters by Mark Benschop in which he designated the President of Guyana as King Jagdeo, a title that his position does not accommodate.

I have no problem with Mr Benschop doing so. I have a problem with Stabroek News, a national newspaper, publishing a letter that assigns to the President a title other than that which officially has been given to him on the basis of the peoples’ votes.

In publishing such, the Stabroek News has revealed gross disrespect for itself, the government and the people of Guyana.

Yours faithfully,

Krishna Nand Prasad

Editor’s note

Heads of state and heads of government are called much worse things than this in many democratic countries. Surely cartoonists, columnists and letter writers should have the latitude to tease and caricature those in power, indeed that is an important part of what a free press is all about.
