`Stealing five sheep at one time difficult’ – counsel

A 19-year-old taxi-driver and a 21-year-old carpenter accused of stealing five sheep were granted bail when the duo appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Ramlochan Beepat called ‘Buckboy’ of Morashee, East Bank Essequibo and Kishan Nairku called ‘Buddy’ of Lot 47 Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD) both pleaded not guilty to a joint charge of larceny of cattle and were granted bail in the sum of $50 000 and $25 000 respectively by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.

It is alleged that between last Friday and last Saturday at La Jalousie, WCD, the duo stole five sheep valued at $300 000, the property of Ishri Singh. The matter was reported and following police investigations they were arrested and charged.

Attorney-at-law Hughley Griffith appearing for Nairku stated that his client is a taxi-driver with the Playboy Taxi Service, is 19 years old and lives with his father at the given address. The defence counsel declared that “it is clear stealing five sheep at one time is a very difficult thing” and requested that bail be granted in a modest sum. Beepat, who was unrepresented by counsel, told the court that he had purchased the sheep “from a man on the road”. He stated that he is a carpenter, lives at Morashee and this was the second time that he was in court.

The magistrate, after listening to the submissions, granted bail and ordered the duo to return to court on January 31 next year at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
