US woman had cocaine strapped to body – court told

A US citizen who allegedly attempted to smuggle cocaine out of Guyana via the airport by strapping almost one kilo of the illicit drug to her thighs and buttocks yesterday denied the allegation when she appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Nadine Chavis of Brooklyn, New York was remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive Hamilton after she pleaded not guilty to a charge of trafficking in narcotics.

It is alleged that on Saturday last at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, Chavis had 909 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The woman was reportedly caught with the drugs around 4.40 pm as she attempted to board a flight back to the US. Reports are that the police acting on information searched the woman and found four parcels – two on her buttocks and two between her legs. She was arrested and later charged.

Attorney-at-law Raphael Trotman entered an appearance for Chavis. The defence counsel requested that the matter remain in that court rather than being transferred to the Providence Magis-trate’s Court.

He also said that he would not be making a bail application and requested that the matter be adjourned to Friday.

Trotman said that his client’s relatives and the government have some concerns to address and he would like to have an opportunity to speak with her. He said too that there is a possibility that Chavis will adopt a certain course of action.

The matter will continue on Friday.
