Chopped fish vendor may not lose hands

Shreemattie Vivekanand who was hacked about her body by her now dead husband on Monday evening has successfully undergone an operation and may no longer be in danger of losing her hands. The 40-year-old fish vendor is said to be recovering and is in a stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Vivekanand’s husband Robert Kumar Jhagru reportedly ingested a poisonous substance minutes after the brutal chopping, which occurred at the couple’s Chateau Margot East Coast Demerara home. He succumbed while being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital around 4.30 am on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Vivekanand’s sister Rona told Stabroek News that Vivekanand successfully underwent an operation some time yesterday and it was now highly unlikely that she would lose her hands. However, Rona said her sister has lost a finger.

Vivekanand is said to be resting comfortably, though still in pain and fully conscious. The woman was hacked about her body with a chopper she used to ply her trade. She sustained chops to both her hands, head, neck and back during the 15-minute ordeal.

According to reports, on the day in question, Vivekanand’s husband flew into a rage just after 9 pm and started throwing accusations at her. From all appearances, Vivekanand was sitting on the bed when her husband locked the bedroom door and started hacking at her with a chopper. The couple’s 16-year-old daughter could only listen to her mother’s screams and plead with her father to stop hurting her mother.

Vivekanand’s sister later managed to kick open the door and several members of the community policing group also went to the woman’s aid.
