Bent Street rape accused remanded until next year

A 32-year-old man will spend his Christmas and New Year’s Day in the Camp Street prison after Magistrate’s Melissa Robertson-Ogle remanded him for allegedly forcing a woman into having sex with him.

Oswald Johnson of Lot ‘G’ Bent Street was not required to plead to the indictable charge of rape when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. He allegedly committed the act on a 38-year-old woman.

Before the charge was read, Johnson told the court that the virtual complainant (VC) went to the police station several times to indicate that she did not want to proceed with the allegation.

“The girl said that she made a mistake and she gon don de story. She went back to the station but they tell she that she still got to come to court,” he said.

However, the VC who was present told the court that she wanted to go ahead with the matter.

Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail being granted, stressing that he was before the court for a serious offence and if granted bail there is a likelihood that he would tamper with the witness.

Magistrate Robertson-Ogle later refused him bail and adjourned the matter in January 11, next year.
