NA hospital pedestrian entrance to be shifted

The pedestrian entrance at the New Amsterdam hospital is to be shifted from the Main access road to Garrison road by next year to reduce accidents and encourage vendors to move from the roadway.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the New Amsterdam Hospital Dr Vishwa Mahadeo made this disclosure recently at a Regional Democratic Council (RDC) press conference.

Dr Mahadeo stated that the entrance to the New Amsterdam hospital is to be shifted to the blood bank area where persons will use Garrison road.

He stated that vehicles will continue to use the main entrance and added that he hopes the vendors will move to Garrison road. He added that they had already written to the necessary authorities on the vendor issue. The vendors have their stalls located just along the hospital fence at the corner of the road.

He stated that a footpath along with a bridge would have to be built for the new entrance and he is hoping that it will be completed early in the New Year. He added that with the completion of the canteen, persons visiting the hospital will be able to purchase what they need while there.

The decision to shift the pedestrian entrance came about after reports of accidents taking place in front of the hospital. The main access road located at the front of the hospital is usually busy with vehicular traffic on a daily basis since the Canje Bridge is located only a short distance away. Persons travelling from the Corentyne and Canje and persons travelling to the New Amsterdam hospital from New Amsterdam all use the same road.

This has been problematic for some pedestrians crossing and so to ensure the safety of persons visiting the institution the entrance will be moved.
