Government should look at incompetence in state agencies, ministries and the regions

Dear Editor,

The removal of Mr Ronald Alli as Chairman of the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) was long overdue. GPL has a high outstanding debt to collect; has losses through electricity theft and line loss of over 40%; and blackouts seem to have returned on a steady basis.

President Bharrat Jagdeo should look at state corporations, state agencies, ministries and regions to root out incompetents there who operate as if they are not accountable to any authority and who do as they please. The National Insurance Scheme and the Georgetown City Council are other places which the government needs to look at.

The government over the years seems to have turned a blind eye to inefficiencies in state agencies.

Incompetence, poor management and corruption exist in several of them, and people do not know where to go to complain as there are no avenues for them. The government forgets that it is taxpayers’ money which funds the ministries, agencies, regions, etc, but there is poor service in return.

Yours faithfully,

Baldeo Persaud
