The six Republic Bank employees, allegedly implicated in an $8 million ABM theft, were yesterday released on $20,000 bail each. They are to report to the police on a daily basis as investigations continue into the fraud.
Relatives of the six employees had protested their prolonged detention, saying there was no link between them and the disappearance of the money.
The employees’ relatives had gone to the bank on Monday in an effort to solicit information on why the workers continued to be detained. However, they were unable to get any information. Bank officials have not been saying anything on the matter.
Stabroek News was told that an incident occurred at the said banking institution three months ago when someone attempted to raid one of the Automated Banking Machines.Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the money disappeared from the ABM at the Guyoil gas station on the Kitty Public Road and was discovered by a staff member. Management was contacted and the six employees, who reportedly have the access code to the ABM, were called in. They have been in custody since then, this newspaper was told.
