Herstelling fisherman charged over stabbing death of wife

The Herstelling fisherman who allegedly stabbed his reputed wife to death on Tuesday after she refused to return to the home they shared, appeared yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court charged with murder.

Chetram Singh called `Monster’, 43, of Lot 4 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara was not required to plead to the capital offence and Magistrate Allan Wilson remanded him to prison.

It is alleged that he murdered Eileen Lall, the mother of his five children.

Reports are that Lall moved out of her husband’s home and went to live with an elderly family friend in the same area. Around 4:30 on Tuesday afternoon, he turned up at the house and begged her to return home. She refused and an argument reportedly began. It was during this period that Singh allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Lall about nine times about her body. She was taken to the Georgetown Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Following the stabbing neighbours said that Singh fled in the direction of the Herstelling cane fields.

The police launched a search for him but Singh managed to evade them. On Thursday morning police in La Grange, West Coast Demerara picked up Singh.

Stabroek News was told that at the time of his capture the fisherman had a huge rice bag filled with his clothing and a pillow.

When he arrived at court yesterday he was carrying his bundle and seemed unmoved by all the attention he was getting from persons standing around the courtyard and members of the media.

A very untidy looking Singh went before the magistrate about twenty minutes after his arrival.

Throughout the court proceedings his face was expressionless.

He will make a second appearance at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on March 9.
