Rename North Road Desmond Hoyte Road

Dear Editor,

I read with unadulterated joy (Lance will forgive the pun) that Almond Street has been renamed Lance Gibbs Street. It is an accolade that is well deserved and the Georgetown City Council must be congratulated for its initiative. That said I must now publicly state my disappointment that to date the City Council has not seen it fit to rename North Road after the late, great Hugh Desmond Hoyte. Few can deny that this son of the soil made an exceptional and enduring contribution to his country as a politician, a visionary, a Statesman and a man.

It was Desmond Hoyte who paved the way for Guyana to have free and fair elections in 1992. There can be no greater irony than the fact that those who stridently opposed his actions in so doing are now opposed to North Road being renamed after him. I find this churlish, petty and vindictive. Spiritual rebirth begins with forgiveness especially when there is nothing to forgive. Persons who are truly spiritually evolved are able to put aside their own feelings of discomfiture and move to a higher level of consciousness.

I call on City Hall to recognize a great and accomplished leader by renaming North Road – Desmond Hoyte Road.

Yours faithfully,

F Hamley Case
