Swimming Instructors course starts Wednesday

The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) will hold a Swimming Instructors Course on Wednesday and Thursday as a precursor to an International Swimming Association (FINA) Coaching Clinic scheduled for July this year.

The course is the first step towards increasing the corps of trained Swimming instructors in Guyana.

It is also the start of GASA’s certification program for the 2007 calendar year.

A GASA release stated that the upcoming course has three modules. GASA personnel will conduct the course with assistance, if necessary, from qualified individuals with the appropriate training.

Edna Rodrigues and Elisa Briscioli will present module one which deals with Health and Safety in the Pool and water front environment while Nicholas Fraser and Charles Corbin will present module two which deals with effective communication and motivation.

Stephanie Fraser and Joanne Lowe will conduct module three which teaches how to conduct a swim lesson. The course includes both practical and theoretical assessments.

All intended participants must be at least 16 years of age at the commencement of the course and should have successfully completed the First Aid and Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training or equivalent.

Persons who do not meet this requirement may attend the course, but will not be certified until the First Aid/CPR course is completed.

All intended participants should be able to understand and apply a basic knowledge of the techniques of the four competitive strokes.

Interested persons are asked to register at Colgrain’s Pool Administrative Office on Camp Street, on or before Wednesday. A nominal registration fee for the course will be charged in an effort to make the course a success.
