Four held in Omai break-in

Four men are in police custody, while two others managed to escape on Sunday after police and security officials of Omai Gold Mines Limited found them hiding in a building at the mine site in the Essequibo River.

Police in a press release said that about 1.45 am on Sunday Omai’s security personnel and police ranks observed that the locks for a door to one of the buildings were wrenched off and the door open. They found seven men in the building.

Police said that during efforts to arrest the men, one of them, Garfield Wintz, 37, of Graham Street, Plaisance, was shot in the right shoulder by Omai’s security personnel. He has been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Police are also investigating a shooting incident that occurred about 8 pm on Sunday at Middle Road, La Penitence during which John Nurse, 24, of Goed Fortuin, WBD, was shot in his left thigh.

Investigations revealed that Nurse was in a motor car when he became involved in an argument with a man on a bicycle. He came out of the car to confront the man who pulled out a firearm, shot Nurse and rode away.
