Two accused of sodomy rearrested after alleged victim dies

Two men accused of sodomizing a Belvedere Squatting Area, Corentyne man are in police custody after man died at the New Amsterdam Hospital on Sunday.

According to reports, 51-year-old Deodat Persaud Shivdyal, a drainage and irrigation worker, lived alone and he had invited the men to his house for a drink on December 21. Around 8 pm, they told him, “we wan bugger you”, Shivdyal had told police. He said he refused and the men tied him up and took turns performing the act.

Stabroek News learnt that Shivdyal reported the matter to the police two days later after he started to suffer from abdominal pain. Police escorted him to the hospital and he was admitted after being examined.

Relatives said Shivdyal had to undergo surgery a few days ago but he never fully recovered. They said they learnt of his death when they went to the hospital on Sunday during visiting hours.

Police sources said the suspects were arrested after the matter was reported and they were subsequently placed on bail. They were rearrested on Saturday after the man’s condition worsened.

Shivdyal, who has been separated from his wife for the past seven years, is survived by his three married children and grandchildren.
