Should the police seize vehicles in these cases?

Dear Editor,

Why are the police seizing persons’ vehicles for traffic offences like ‘running’ traffic lights, overloading, loud music, failing to comply with road signs, and other infractions’ ?

Is this not an unlawful act in view of the fact that the police have proper legal means to have convictions obtained and fines imposed? Why seize the vehicles? And what about the security of such vehicles? Should any damage occur to such vehicles, who is to bear the repair costs?

It seems to me from this distance that power is running loose and the police are exceeding their powers with impunity. Is this their way of regaining their long-lost respect? I do not think the police are really making a serious effort to regain public confidence in their duties. These seizures are simply another means of aggravation to the public.

Time for the politicians to step in forcefully and stop this ‘apparently’ illegal act of unnecessary seizures.

Your faithfully,

Carl Veecock
